U2 will perform a free concert to help the city celebrate 20 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall, MTV announced on Tuesday evening.

The Irish rockers will perform in front of the Brandenburg Gate on Nov. 5 during the network’s Europe Music Awards, hosted by Katy Perry. The band’s performance will be beamed via satellite to the awards ceremony at Berlin’s nearby O2 World Arena.

The Berlin Wall fell Nov. 9, 1989, ending almost 30 years of separation between east and west. In a statement Tuesday, U2 manager Paul McGuinness said it would be exciting to be in Berlin, “20 years almost to the day since the wall came down.”

U2’s 1991 album Achtung Baby was partly inspired by the band’s stay in the city.

thriller mtv number 1 album www.hometownhollywood.comMichael Jackson’s 1983 LP Thriller has been named the “Greatest Album Ever” in a new poll from MTV. The pop superstar’s Quincy Jones-produced album–which featured hits like “Billie Jean,” “Beat It,” “Thriller,” and “The Girl Is Mine”— is the world’s best-selling album and dominated a poll of MTV viewers.

“I don’t think there’ll ever be another album like it in the history of music,” says MTV Base presenter Trevor Nelson. “There will never be a marriage of producer and artist, or songwriting and pop sensibility like that again. Due to the way people buy records now, there’ll never be an album that sells as many copies.”

More than 40,000 votes were cast by fans asked to choose their favorite album since 1981 from a shortlist of 26 LPs. The final list was then compiled by music industry experts from MTV’s three UK channels – MTV2, VH1 and MTV Base.

Check out the Top 20 and let us know what you think of the album rankings.

To celebrate U2’s weeklong gig on CBS’ “Late Show With David Letterman,” a block-long stretch of West 53rd Street was temporarily renamed after the veteran Irish rockers on Tuesday.

“Somewhere south of Duke Ellington Way and north of Joey Ramone Place we find ourselves,” said lead singer Bono. “And we’re the band where the streets have no name.”

The four band members joined Mayor Michael Bloomberg and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn in unveiling the “U2 Way” street sign on Broadway across West 53rd Street from the Ed Sullivan Theater, where Letterman’s show is taped.
