Lou Dobbs Leaves CNN For A Better Life In Politics
Posted on 12. Nov, 2009 by CSS.
Lou Dobbs, the longtime CNN anchor whose anti-immigration stance allegedly made him the target of a “drive-by shooting” last month, has announced that he is leaving the cable news channel after 29 years — effective immediately.
“Some leaders in the media, politics and business have been urging me to go beyond my role here at CNN and engage in constructive problem-solving,” the host of Lou Dobbs Tonight said just after 7PM Wednesday. “I’m considering a number of options and directions,” the journalist added.
His contract was not set to expire until the end of 2011, but the network agreed to release him early.
“Lou has now decided to carry the banner of advocacy journalism elsewhere,” Jonathan Klein, the president of CNN/U.S. said in a statement. “All of us will miss his appetite for big ideas, the megawatt smile and larger than life presence he brought to our newsroom.”
New Jersey State Police were called to Dobbs’ home last month to investigate reports of gunfire. Dobbs has suggested that his family is being targeted because of his unpopular views on illegal immigration and border security.
Dobbs had been with CNN since its launch in 1980 and was the last of the network’s original anchors

U2 Berlin Wall Performance November 5
Posted on 28. Oct, 2009 by CSS.

U2 will perform a free concert to help the city celebrate 20 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall, MTV announced on Tuesday evening.
The Irish rockers will perform in front of the Brandenburg Gate on Nov. 5 during the network’s Europe Music Awards, hosted by Katy Perry. The band’s performance will be beamed via satellite to the awards ceremony at Berlin’s nearby O2 World Arena.
The Berlin Wall fell Nov. 9, 1989, ending almost 30 years of separation between east and west. In a statement Tuesday, U2 manager Paul McGuinness said it would be exciting to be in Berlin, “20 years almost to the day since the wall came down.”
U2’s 1991 album Achtung Baby was partly inspired by the band’s stay in the city.

President Obama Awarded Nobel Peace Prize 2009
Posted on 09. Oct, 2009 by CSS.

President Obama won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for “his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples,” the Norwegian Nobel Committee said, also citing the president’s outreach to the Muslim world and attempts to curb nuclear proliferation.
The committee said it attached particular emphasis on the President’s vision of a world without nuclear weapons.
The stunning choice made Obama only the third sitting U.S. president to win the Nobel Peace Prize, shocking many Nobel watchers- who believed it was too early to award the president. Barack Obama took office only weeks before the committee’s Feb. 1 deadline for nominations. Theodore Roosevelt won the award in 1906 and Woodrow Wilson won in 1919. Former President Jimmy Carter won the award in 2002, while former Vice President Al Gore shared the 2007 prize with the U.N. panel on climate change.
“Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world’s attention and given its people hope for a better future,” the committee said this morning. “His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world’s population.”
“Obama has as president created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play,” the committee said.
So if nominations had to be in by Feb 1- That means Obama was nominated just 9 days after taking office… Doesn’t that strike anyone as a little odd?

Mayor Cory Booker Bans Conan O’Brien From Entire State Of New Jersey
Posted on 02. Oct, 2009 by CSS.
Newark Mayor Cory Booker widened Conan O’Brien’s ban from Newark to all of New Jersey in a YouTube video posted on Thursday afternoon.
The “feud” began when The Tonight Show host blasted Newark while talking about the city’s proposed new health-care plan. As a result of the insult, a livid Booker banned Conan from Newark International Airport, slapping the comedian on the facility’s “No-Fly List.” Conan responded by banning the mayor from L.A.’s Burbank Airport, quipping: “There are other ways to get to your city. I can navigate the nation’s sewer system because everyone knows all sewers lead to Newark.”
Mayor Booker’s response is to increase Conan’s ban to include the entire state of New Jersey and Newark’s sister cities across the world.
Pretty funny stuff!

Barack Obama “Late Show With David Letterman” Video
Posted on 22. Sep, 2009 by CSS.
President Barack Obama spoke openly about whether he thinks racism is behind recent political attacks against him on the Late Show with David Letterman Monday night.
Referring to Republican Rep. Joe Wilson’s “You lie!” outburst as Obama addressed health-care reform to the nation two weeks ago, Letterman asked Obama if he believed former President Jimmy Carter’s assertion that the South Carolina congressman is racist.
“Well, first of all, I think it’s important to realize that I was actually black before the election, so…This is true. This is true,” the President laughed. “I actually think that what’s happened is that whenever a president tries to bring about significant changes, particularly during times of economic unease, then there is a certain segment of the population that gets very riled up.”
He continued: “You know, one of the things you sign up for in politics is folks yell at you, but I think that what has been missing from the conversation is that the overwhelming majority of people, Republican or Democrat, I think they just want to see some common sense, they want to see some honesty and integrity in Washington. I think they’re turned off by the shouting and the yelling, and they expect more from their public elected officials.”

Ben Affleck Writes Congo Essay For 'Time' Magazine
Posted on 16. Feb, 2009 by CSS.
Actor Ben Affleck made his first attempt at amateur journalism by penning an article on the conflict in Congo for Time Magazine this weekend.
The star of the box office hit He’s Just Not That Into You, who took Nightline on a trip to the area last year, wrote the article to draw even additional attention to the embattled region of Africa.
“I’ve been traveling to Congo since 2007 to learn…” Ben began the nearly 1,000-word essay, titled “A Glimmer of Hope In Africa.”
“The warring parties in the east can be distilled into three main groups: the Congolese army; a breakaway faction composed mainly of Tutsis, led by a former general, Laurent Nkunda; and an outlaw militia, the Democratic Liberation Forces of Rwanda (FDLR), led by the same Interahamwe Hutu extremists who committed the 1994 genocide of Tutsis in neighboring Rwanda.”

Michelle Obama 'VOGUE' March 2009 Cover Photo
Posted on 11. Feb, 2009 by CSS.
On Tuesday, I passed along the tidbit that First Lady Michelle Obama would cover the March 2009 issue Vogue–and as promised here she is.
What are our thoughts on this cover?
Mrs. O is only the second First Lady to front an issue of The Fashion Bible–Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was the first to do so back in December 1998.
Michelle Obama on the March 2009 cover of Vogue arrives on newsstands on Feb. 17.
