The Spice Girls are in talks to perform during the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympics Games in London, according to British music mogul Simon Fuller — who turned the group into the most successful girl band of all-time during their chart reign in the late ’90s.

“They stand for so much in British music history and I can’t think of a better time for them to get back together for another performance. The demand for them as a band is as strong as ever,” Fuller said.

“They will not want to be performing hits like Wannabe in their 40s, but it’’s amazing how often people talk about another reunion. And I think if they do it, it’’s going to be in 2012.”

The event will be seen by an estimated two billion people. The most successful British bands since The Beatles, the Spice Girls have sold more than 65 million records worldwide. In 2007, the hit-makers briefly returned for a reunion tour.

Michael Phelps "TODAY Show" Interview With Matt Lauer

In an interview with The Today Show’s Matt Lauer, Olympic champion Michael Phelps speaks out about the now infamous photo of him smoking marijuana from a bong.

“It was– really, you know, the people I hurt, you know, is my family, clearly. My friends,” he says. “The close people around me. And most importantly, the fans. And– and, you know, I realize that that hurt a lot of people.”

While the 23-year-old admits that what he did was “bad judgement” and “a mistake,” he insists he and his friends were just celebrating: “I mean, we were just celebrating, honestly. And– you know, there was probably two or three people there I didn’t know. It was a very small group. Six or seven people probably total in the whole house. Like nothing major. You know, not like a giant college house party. It was nothing like that. It was just a small group and we were just sitting around and celebrating.”

More On Michael Phelps Infamous Bong Photo & Apology

Record-setting Olympian Michael Phelps was photographed taking a hit off a bong at a party at the University of South Carolina. The photo was said to be taken in early November when Phelps was secretly seeing a co-ed at the college, probably one of many women he was seeing at the time. News of The World has the photo along with a party-goer’s account that he was smoking weed, drinking beer and doing plenty of shots with everyone. It’s not really surprising or shocking, but Phelps has a reputation as a highly focused athlete and plenty of multi-million dollar endorsement deals to protect. News Of The World claims that his people worked hard to try and convince them not to run the story:

The US Olympics Committee, who have pledged to clamp down on drug use, refused to comment, as did USA Swimming and Phelps’ coach Bob Bowman.

More surprising still was the World Anti-Doping Agency’s refusal to comment, given that they introduced the four-year ban on sport’s drug users.

Phelps, who earned £4million last year in endorsements, has resumed training for the 2012 games.

But there were fears about his commitment when…

Phelps is represented by marketing giant Octagon, which works with huge brands such as Mastercard and HSBC. They admitted proven cannabis use would be “a major taint” on Phelps’ character.

Spokesman Clifford Bloxham offered us an extraordinary deal not to publish our story, saying Phelps would become our columnist for three years, host events and get his sponsors to advertise with us.

In return, he asked that we kill Phelps’ bong picture. Bloxham said: “It’s seeing if something potentially very negative for Michael could turn into something very positive for the News of the World.”

He stressed that the swimmer had taken 1,500 drug tests and never failed one.

-From News of The World

After News of The World refused Phelps’ spokesperson’s offer, he handled the situation with a well worded admission. Phelps has good people behind him who know how to deal with the press:

I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment. I’m 23 years old and despite the successes I’ve had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again

It’s a blip on the media radar that will affect Phelps more than anyone else.

A lot of other media sites are playing this as ‘its just marijuana’ and ‘not that big of a deal’.  I see why they are saying that, But I think they are missing the big picture on this one.

I mean millions of adolescents were glued to their TVs over the summer mesmerized by Phelps every win- Phelps became an instant role model and inspiration to so many kids, his lack of judgement and drug use will undoubtedly send the wrong message to many….

Michael Phelps covers the December 8, 2008 Sports Illustrated

Michael Phelps just achieved another unprecedented feat; the Baltimore native has become the first swimmer honored as Sports Illustrated’s “Sportsman of the Year.”

“Honestly, I feel like the same person I’ve been my whole life,” Michael said at a recent photo session where he posed for the Sports Illustrated cover. “I’m doing what I love. I was able to accomplish what I wanted to accomplish this year. It’s been a dream come true of a year, and I definitely couldn’t ask to change anything.”

S.I. group editor Terry McDonell said this year it was an easy choice:

“Look at what he did in Beijing last summer. I was there. I saw him race after race, win again and again — we all saw that. And then to know him now — it is so obvious that he changed not only swimming, but also the entire Olympic landscape.”

Phelps, 23, broke human dolphin Mark Spitz’s record when he brought home eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics in August. He is the “Most Decorated Olympian” in the history of the Games.

Well you reap what you sow. .. Michael Phelps father has been talking to the media about how he has not spoken to his son since before Michael left for Beijing. I don’t know if he thinks he can drum up some sympathy or what but Michael Phelps is USA golden boy now and I think Fred Phelps will be hard pressed to find anyone sympathising with his situation.

Michael tries not to talk about his father and attributes all of his success to his mom Debbie.

It’s really sad when people become successful and those key players in their life that weren’t there growing up all of a sudden want back in… Almost always for allterior motives.

Even fellow Olympian athletes want in on the action, especially one Stephanie Rice an Australian swimmer who is walking away with three gold medals of her own.

Here’s what the New York Post had to say:

Phelps, fresh from shattering Mark Spitz’s 36-year-old record, was spotted Monday night in a hot make-out session with Down Under swimmer Stephanie Rice, a source tells The Post’s Clemente Lisi and Luke Dennehy. The pumped-up pair clinched and swapped spit at a celebratory bash outside the Olympic Village. The Baltimore Bullet swooped in for the lip-lock with the 20-year-old brunette just weeks after she split from Aussie swimmer Eamon Sullivan. “All the swimmers are talking about it, and [Sullivan] is cut up about what happened,” the source said. The day after the face-sucking frolics, Phelps and Rice cheekily posed together for Speedo – laughing and playfully groping each other as a photographer snapped them in their swimsuits. “I definitely admire him for his athletic ability and everything he’s achieved,” gushed Rice, who won three gold medals of her own. “I’m just really glad to be in the mix with that.”
