Watchmen captivated audiences this weekend. The comic book thriller–starring Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode, Jackie Earle Haley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Malin Akerman, and Patrick Wilson–conquered the weekend box office, earning $55.7 million in its first three days in theaters, according to early studio estimates.

The two hour, 41 minute film opened on 3,611 screens, the most ever for an R-rated movie. Even with consumers paying more for a ticket at the cinema than they did two years ago, Watchmen failed to top 2007’s 300, which earned $70 million during its opening weekend — a record for March openings.

The movie is set in 1985 America in which costumed superheroes are part of everyday society.

Tyler Perry’s ‘Madea Goes to Jail, which topped the box office two weekends in a row, dropped to No. 2, making $8.8 million, bringing total earning to $76.5 million.

The action/thriller Taken, starring Liam Neeson as a former CIA agent ($7.5 million), Academy Award-winner Slumdog Millionaire ($6.9 million), and Kevin James’ Paul Blart: Mall Cop ($4.2 million) rounded out the Top 5.
